Round
2 Report....
Super
Lap Scotland - The UK's newest lap-time challenge event.
Super Lap Scotland, in association with RA Motorsport Developments,
held round 2 of its inaugural championship on Saturday 27th July,
with its first clock-wise visit to Knockhill. The double header
event was part of a world first 'Twin Track' weekend. The
rules and class structure will equalise the most powerful cars
on the planet with even the most modest of road cars. The aim
of Super Lap Scotland is to offer competitive motorsport action
for everyone from the track day driver, the Hot Hatch driver through
to some of the most extreme cars around. It is a genuine alternative
to track days and a stepping stone to full blown circuit racing.
The
format of the event sees all the cars share the track in two 15
minute practice sessions during the morning, before moving onto
the point scoring qualifying and final sessions. For the qualifying
sessions, a maximum of 5 cars at a time are released onto the
track in 10 second intervals for a warm-up lap followed by a two
"hot" laps and then a cool down lap whereby they try
to set their fastest time possible. Each car gets a minimum of
two qualifying runs, giving them the best opportunity to set a
class leading time.
Free
Practice 1 was dominated
by Charlie Shaw in the rapid 700+bhp Class A AG Motorsport Focus.
Shaw finished the incident packed session 4 seconds clear at the
top with a blistering 52.900s lap on his first flying lap. Another
notable performance was David
Long, setting a new P.B. of 57.308.
The
session was red flagged following an incident involving Craig
McCready. His Class C Astra barrel rolling down SEAT Curve (Duffus Dip)
and coming to a rest on the tyre wall. Thankfully Craig walked
away from the crash unharmed, again showing why roll cages, and
the best safety gear you can get, are a must-have in competitive
motorsport!

Practice 2
After setting the pace in FP1, Charlie Shaw suffered
problems and finished FP2 at the bottom of the time sheets, completing
only 1 slow lap. This opened up the session for Graham
Davidson to set the pace in his Noble M400. Davidson was trying
out different tyres in these early sessions, so did well to set
such a fast lap early on. Alan
Gourlay improved on his FP1 performance to head class B. Most
drivers would have been familiar with the clockwise setup, but
this didn't stop them hammering the laps in during this session.
William Keith
completing 16 laps in a busy open session.

Qualifying
Times count and the pressure builds from now on.
Drivers have limited runs of 2 laps to set a fast lap. The biggest
battle in this session was between Dave
Herd and William
Keith in Class D. Two completely different cars (Fiesta and
Impreza respectively) separated by 0.108 of a second! Dave Herd
triumphed in the end and took 15 points for top spot in D. Callum
Dryburgh finished first in C with Andrew Christie a close
second. Alan Freeland came alive in qualifying and leap-frogged
Alan Gourley
to top spot in B. There was more drama in A with the late arrival
of Shaw's focus. Graham
Davidson, Russ
Paton and Brian
Rennie were looking good for the top 3 spots before a late
surge from Shaw to take P1.

Final
Maximum pressure now... 1 flying lap to get it
right. Approach with caution to secure a lap, or all out maximum
attack?
With Wayne Sutherland (B), Brian Rennie (A), Craig McDowall (D)
and Craig McCready (C) all missing through issues earlier in the
day, not to mention Bob MacKay who was stuck offshore, there was
a chance for others to gain ground in the championship.
Class D was a close battle between Dave Herd and William
Keith again, with Dave taking the victory, and a clean sweep of
65pts for Round 2.
Class C saw
Callum Dryburgh beat the MK Indy of Andrew Christie. Again a clean
65pts sweep to take him level with Bob MacKay in the Class C championship.
Class B was
taken in style by Alan Freeland (65pts). He finished some 3 seconds
clear of second place Alan Gourlay in his Caterham R500. David
Long finished P3 in his Caterham R400, and also took home the
coveted TrackScotland driver of the day trophy.
Class
A An early retirement
for Brian Rennie, Jason
Ogg unable to attend and a spectacular crash for Fiona
Kindness in Round 1 ruled them out for today so Class
A was now a three car batlle, between Shaw, Davidson and Paton.
A consistent Charlie Shaw took the win with another 52.9 second
lap, with Davidson one second behind. Russ Paton took third a
further 1 second behind.
